NIRN becomes incorporated
18 months ago, CRNI began a pilot project with the aim of creating a standalone reuse & repair network in Northern Ireland.
Supported by DAERA and guided by Eimear Montague, with input from a number of incredible organisations working to reduce waste and grow the circular economy in Northern Ireland, the project has exceeded its objectives and as of February 2022, Northern Ireland Resource Network (NIRN) has become incorporated.
There are infinite environmental, economic and social benefits in embracing a circular economy across all of the island, and we look forward to maintaining a close, collaborative relationship with NIRN and its members.

Developing a Circular Textiles System for Ireland innovation & demonstration project launches Donate Don't Waste pilots
The Donate Don't Waste pilots aim to understand attitudes and behaviours around unwanted clothing and home textiles, share information on where and what to donate, as well as text interventions to make donations easier, such as increased donation points, community collections and door-to-door collections.
All clothing and home textiles have value and keeping them in circulation for longer within Ireland has potential to save environmental resources and create local jobs and training opportunities. In Ireland, about 68,000 tonnes of textiles are discarded every year by householders and commercial users. If just 15% of discarded textiles were reused, there could be environmental savings of over 100,000 tonnes of carbon.
Charity shops are the main drivers of textile reuse, with about 14,500 tonnes reused by the Irish Charity Shops Association, whose members include SVP and NCBI shops in Charleville. Through reselling textiles, these shops raise funds for people in need and create local jobs and training opportunities.

Given the important role that suppliers will play in the transition to GPP, the EPA has launched two training supports for suppliers of goods and services to the public sector in Ireland.
The second is a training presentation which follows on from the introductory video and provides more detailed information for suppliers. Its purpose is to provide background information, advice and practical tips on Green Public Procurement. The presentation can be viewed here.
