🌈Highlights of the week

IRL

• Last week, the government has introduced its Circular Economy Bill.  The new bill introduced has some great provisions, including;
  •  Giving the Minister the authority to impose levies on single use items, such as cups, food containers and packaging 
  •  Setting out the mechanism to set up the Circular Economy Strategy and putting the food waste prevention strategy on legislative footing
  • Giving local authorities the ability to set up CCTV at dumping sites
  • Mandating that businesses adopt a 3-bin waste collection system

EUROPE

• The EU Circular Economy Package was published last week.  It includes the flagship Sustainable Products Initiative (SPI), a Strategy on Sustainable Textiles, the Empowering Consumers Initiative, and a revision of the Construction Products Regulation. ECOS have prepared some brilliant fact sheets on each category:

• Accelerator Programme for Sustainable Textile and Fashion Designers: The EU-funded Fashion for Change 2022 Accelerator Programme aims to support designers, innovators and start-ups from the European textiles and fashion industry in the circular transition. Deadline: 19 May

• Survey (IRL): The Charities Regulator is working to further improve its ability to report meaningfully, accurately and to provide greater clarity and transparency in relation to the charity sector. With this aim in mind, a proposed charity classification standard has been developed with the intention of facilitating a discussion on introducing a standard that will be both workable and meaningful.
